My favorite Hawkeye memory was Saturday November 22, 2008. It was Senior day for the Iowa Hawkeye Football team. My son Gavin was a senior on the team and for my wife Mary Kay and I to be on the field to greet him after he came out of the tunnel was amazing. We were so proud of our son that day for all the time and effort he put in for five years being a football player for the University of Iowa and to be a part of honoring him and his fellow teammates was a memory I will never forget. It still gives me chills thinking about it!! – Pat McGrath
about the artist
Jason is in his twenty-first year as an Art Specialist with the Des Moines Public Schools and is currently at East High School. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Iowa and his Master’s Degree from Iowa State University (but we won’t hold that against him). Jason’s studio work, both personally and professionally, has a focus on drawing and painting. He is also a former University of Iowa Letterman and 1990 Big Ten Champion in football.
BEHIND THE DESIGN
Having previously done the History of Iowa Football Herky in the first Herky on Parade, Jason approached this design in a similar manner. He knew that he wanted to highlight the great tradition of Iowa wrestling and felt that the best way to do it was by portraits of the National and Olympic Champion coaches and athletes. To unify the different coaching eras, he sprinkled in images that represented the University and the program.
