Jason Soliday & John Gross

Des Moines/Coralville

Our favorite Hawkeye moments are seeing the impact the university has made on our community and its rich history of writers. The Iowa Writers’ Workshop pioneered the teaching of creative writing at the university level and dozens of creative programs within the university and the city followed. You can find your story in Iowa City, a UNESCO City of Literature.

about the artist

Jason is in his twenty-first year as an Art Specialist with the Des Moines Public Schools and is currently at East High School. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Iowa and his Master’s Degree from Iowa State University (but we won’t hold that against him). Jason’s studio work, both personally and professionally, has a focus on drawing and painting. He is also a former University of Iowa Letterman and 1990 Big Ten Champion in football.

John built the little free library for Herky; he owned Technigraphics with his wife Carolyn for 30 years and is now retired. He is still active in Boy Scouts after 25 years and enjoys woodworking, canoeing and reading.

Iowa City is home to a number of Little Free Libraries, an idea that began in Hudson, Wisconsin and has spread throughout 40 states and 20 countries. As the third designated City of Literature in the world, it only seemed appropriate that Herky should pay tribute to reading and become in himself a Little Free Library.
