Kim O'Meara

Cedar Rapids

Our favorite Hawkeye tradition is anytime Herky takes the field, takes the court, enters a room….and anytime the Hawkeye Marching Band/Iowa Pep Band strikes up the Iowa Fight Song!

about the artist

Kim graduated from the University of Iowa with a BA in Art and Art Education, a BS in Secondary Education, and an MA in Elementary Education. She taught for the Cedar Rapids Community School District for over 34 years. Kim has also taught art for the Eastern Iowa Art Academy and College for Kids for Grant Wood Area Education Agency. She now concentrates on creating her own artwork, doing mostly painting, jewelry making and large sculptural mosaics. She lives part time in the woods outside of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and also on Monterey Bay in Aptos, California.

Kim returned after 10 years to complete version two of Reflections of U. Instead of the silver glass tiles she used in 2004, she decided to go with a black tile this time around. She lined the small tiles up one next to another, all in a symmetrical pattern, and grouted the entire sculpture to finish it off. This is easily the heaviest Herky of them all and often takes three people to safely move it!
