HAWKEYE MOMENT

Our favorite Hawkeye Moment is hosting the University of Iowa Museum Art in the art room each trimester. Since the flood in 2008, the UIMA has purchased artwork that can travel to schools so they can continue their educational outreach. The museum regularly brings masks from Africa and Northwest Pacific Coast peoples to South East Junior High. It is such a great experience for students to be able to touch the artwork and even try on the masks. UIMA staff has always been outstanding at sharing their knowledge with my students.

about the artist

John was born September 15, 1999 in Iowa City. He plays soccer and basketball and runs track and cross country. He attended Grant Wood Elementary and currently attends South East Junior High.

BEHIND THE DESIGN

South East Junior High put a call out for all students to submit designs and then the staff voted on a favorite. The school chose the Gladiator design because of its connection to the University of Iowa with the black and gold and its connection to South East with the addition of red.
