Elise Goodvin & City High Art Students
There has always been a special connection between Iowa City High School and the University of Iowa. We are proud to be the Little Hawks, a connection with the Iowa Hawkeyes. It was great when Head Wrestling Coach Tom Brands came on the first day of school in 2012 to speak to the student body. He got the kids excited about being at school and being a Little Hawk. We are proud of Hawkeye legend Tim Dwight, who continues to give back to his alma mater by mentoring several of our students in a mentoring program.
about the artist
Elise Goodvin is a Junior at City High School. She has taken numerous art classes and is involved with Choir and Best Buddies. Her design was chosen for the Herky project and she was assisted by other City High art students in creating the glass mosaic Herky.
BEHIND THE DESIGN
During her Glass class, Elise came up with the idea of using lots of color and glass. The students wanted to create something that would reflect light and brighten up the seemingly-endless winter dreariness. The use of glass mosaic, full of color and reflective glass, was a perfect fit. The detailed process brought students together for a learning experience and a fun after-school activity. As they worked, students found much humor in Herky’s exaggerated musculature contrasted with being covered in flowers-it set the stage for fun energy throughout the whole working process, complete with a gold tooth and eyes made of fused glass!
