One of the best Hawkeye moments was being in Carver Hawkeye Arena when Iowa ‘s Tony Ramos took down and undefeated Jordan Oliver in OT a few years back. I thought the roof was going to cave in with the noise. Unlike any sporting experience I have ever been a part of. – Josh Schamberger, Member of CID Commission Board

BEHIND THE DESIGN
Commander Herky honors all active duty and veteran members of the United States Navy. The summer dress white uniform he wears is based on the uniform worn by CDR Tom Schamberger upon his retirement from the Navy in the 1990s. Schamberger is the father of Josh Schamberger, president of the Iowa City/Coralville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. The younger Schamberger spent his entire childhood living on military bases in Florida, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and San Diego. He took pictures of his father’s uniform, and area Navy recruiters LCRD Scott Alms and LT Brian Deadmon were able to order exact replicas for Herky.
CDR Schamberger was a member of the Blue Angels—the pinnacle of achievement for a member of the Navy—in the early 1990s, which is why Herky wears the Blue Angel crest on his nametag.
